Boyd Tinsley: Facts and Bio
Boyd Calvin Tinsley is a member of the award-winning group, Dave Matthews Band, playing the violin and sometimes performing as a mandolinist. Boyd was born on May 16, 1964 in Charlottesville (Virginia), and has collaborated with the band in varying capacities such as singing backing vocals, harmonizing, and writing songs. He started playing violin when attending middle school, or many years before becoming popular playing with it. He elected to learn the violin because he wasn't given the chance to play the guitar in the school orchestra where he was a member. Not a lot of people know that he actually released an album as a solo artist in 2003, which surprisingly reached as high as number three on the Billboard Internet Sales chart. But he's most recognized as one of the members of Dave Matthews Band that sold six consecutive platinum albums.
Family of Music Enthusiasts
Boyd was raised in a family of music enthusiasts. His dad was once a choir director while his uncle played bass and trumpet for local bands. He grew up in the very same neighborhood with fellow band members Carter Beauford (drummer) and former saxophonist, LeRoi Moore. Although he is an accomplished and popular violinist, he was actually more of a guitar lover when he was young. In his teens, he became a part of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Youth Orchestra. He later studied under concertmaster Isidor Saslav of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. This was a rare opportunity for Tinsley to move to Baltimore to get closer to Isidor. However, at 16, Boyd declined the offer and soon after, his interest shifted from orchestra to popular music. He began listening to other musicians in the rock, jazz, and blues genres.
Highlights of his Career
Before going on a successful career, Boyd Tinsley first studied at the University of Virginia. This is where he started joining regular musical jam sessions. In the early part of the 90s, he organized and formed a band called the Boyd Tinsley Trio, but it didn't last long. Read http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/music.aspx for facts about music.
In 1991, he got his biggest break when Dave Matthews asked him to submit a demo tape with his band while playing violin for the song "Tripping Billies." The demo tape eventually landed him a spot in Dave Matthews Band, which in turn effectively disbanded the Boyd Tinsley Trio.
As a member of a popular band, he also got various endorsement projects. The most popular are JanSport, Tommy Hilfiger, and Twix. By the year 2000, or roughly a decade after joining Dave Matthews Brand, he made a guest appearance for the band The Getaway People, specifically for their second album called Turnpike Diaries.
